When is the next school holiday, and the next public holiday
Pick a country or a region. Its page gives the next school holiday and the next public holiday, how many days away they are, and how many of the days are weekdays that are not public holidays.
This page keeps nothing and asks for nothing. You pick a place by following a link.

How it is decided
These are this page's own rules. The dates themselves come from the source below.
- For most places the dates come from the OpenHolidays API data, as fetched on the day shown on each page. This site does not check them against each ministry's own page.
- The United Kingdom, Japan and the United States list public holidays only. The UK dates are the bank holidays published by GOV.UK. The dates for Japan and the United States are computed from the statutes (the Act on National Holidays of Japan, and the federal holiday statute of the United States), every one is compared with the published tables (the NAOJ almanac, the OPM schedules), and only the compared years are shown. If a single date differs, that country is left out.
- A page stops answering 45 days after its data was fetched (or, for the computed countries, made and compared), until that is done again. No answer is made from an older table.
- Today is the date in the time zone shown on the page: the capital's time zone, or the region's own where it differs.
- The tables list holidays that start within 400 days from today, at most 40 rows each.
- The count of weekdays leaves out Saturday and Sunday, and full-day public holidays that apply to the whole place. It is a count of dates, not a statement about any one school.
- A country page lists nationwide dates only. A region page adds the dates of that region. A date that applies to only part of a region is marked, and up to 4 part names are written out. In the headline, such limits and marks follow the name in square brackets.
- From the source, only entries of the types Public and School are used. Optional holidays, bank-only holidays, and the markers for the first and last day of lessons are left out.
- Marks and notes in the source (provisional, recommended, exception) are shown as they are. An entry marked as an exception is used for the headline only when the place has no other entry.
- A school can differ from these dates (training days, local days off). The school's own notice comes first.
About this page
- It answers one repeated lookup: when the children are next off school, and when the next public holiday is.
- It is not legal advice, and it says nothing about pay or leave. Whether a public holiday is a day off for you depends on the rules where you work.
- For the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States the pages list public holidays only. School holidays there differ by council, municipality, state or school district and are not listed.
- The same answer is published as JSON for assistants and search: /api/answer/holidays?place=de-by&lang=en. The whole table is at /api/holidays.

Data
Contains information from the OpenHolidays API (STÜBER SYSTEMS GmbH), which is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0.
The holiday table on this site is a database derived from it. It is offered under the same licence and can be read in full at /api/holidays.
UK bank holidays, from GOV.UK: contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Japan: computed from the Act on National Holidays, with the equinox days published by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) (its terms of use). United States: computed from 5 U.S.C. 6103 and compared with the schedules of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
